WORLD ART STUDIES &
VISUAL CULTURE

We will consider a broad spectrum of cultural beliefs, objects, architectural monuments, performances, design and visual concepts from across several continents and throughout history to better understand art as a universal and vital socio-cultural phenomena. Through lecture presentations, film, readings, class discussions, and written personal responses, we will consider definitions of art and culture using important concepts and terminology. The elements of visual art and steps for performing visual analysis are presented in sequence throughout the course. Integrated and art-based learning projects will assist students in acquiring essential skills for both visual and textual literacy.
